We can sometimes be triggered into an argument or be ready to fight when someone intentionally or inadvertently makes a comment or says something that provokes our frustration about an issue we feel strongly about. Someone can hit a nerve by saying something which we process as an attack or criticism. Regardless if it was intentional or not, we are now triggered and need to get perspective before we become more upset.

Sometimes we might transfer our frustration from one person or situation onto someone else. Someone outside of the issue might make a comment not knowing how we feel about it or without knowing that we just dealt with the same issue. In times like these, we might find ourselves instantly triggered into the mode of right/wrong, anger/defense without the other person having a clue as to why we are so upset.

Exploring what it is that pushes our buttons can be a revealing exercise in which we might learn a lot about what is going on within us and how it might be impacting our work and relations with others.
